Interior Decorating

Interior decorating consists of the furnishing and/or decorating of an interior and/or exterior space. Interior decorating is not just for the home, but for commercial spaces as well; such as offices, schools, and public areas. It involves planning and selecting all aspects of lighting, colour, texture, paint, soft furnishings, furniture purchase and placement, flooring selection and installation, fabric installations, window treatments and accessories. Interior decorating focuses on the aesthetics of a space. Interior decorating can involve either decorating an existing space or working from a floor plan.   Redecorating or refurbishing a dated style also falls under the banner of interior decorating.

Deciding on furniture, a colour scheme to use to complement our furnishings and how to highlight the features and rooms in our home can seem overwhelming. Adding new decorative pieces and furniture to our decor year after year can often leave you with rooms that are disjointed and overcrowded. For assistance with creating a look and design for our living spaces, we often turn to professional decorators, who have the skills to transform our homes with colours, fabrics and furniture to create a complementary scheme.

But decorating your home need not be a daunting task – you just need to start with the basics to help you work towards the end result.   One of the most valuable pieces of advice that can be given is to keep a scrapbook or file which contains pictures of colours, furniture and decorative items which appeal to you. Collecting pictures of furniture, decorative items, colours and rooms that appeal to you from magazines will help you to determine the style of decorating that appeals to you. Trends will start to emerge in relation to the style of furniture you like, whether monotone colour schemes appeal to you or you have a particular like of a decorative era (eg art deco or French provincial).

Colour is a simple way to change the feel of a room. Choosing a neutral colour to paint your home does not mean that you are going with the ‘status quo’. Decorating with neutral tones can be successful on their own when balanced with other interesting textural neutral elements. Neutrals are also a great backdrop if you only want to add ‘pops’ of colour to your home; for displaying colourful art collections or for when you don’t want to detract from a spectacular view. Colour trends come and go, but that shouldn’t be a reason to avoid colour. There is a wide world of colour around us and while choosing paint colours for your home might feel like a daunting task, given the multitude of paint swatches, it is only paint. When the time comes (and it will), you can change it. Colour has an amazingly powerful ability to make your home comfortable and welcoming, and to influence your mood.

If colour helps to set the mood for your home, the furnishings set the tone. The furnishings you choose both express and shape how you live in your home. Walking into a furniture showroom can be exciting and overwhelming. When choosing furniture, you should first work out what style appeals to you and will also compliment your home’s interior architecture. A good starting point for selecting furnishings that compliment your personal style and your home’s style, is by thinking in terms of the three major furniture styles – traditional, contemporary and transitional.

Traditional or period furniture makes use of styles from the past that have endured because they please the eye. Choices of traditional style furniture shows not only respect for the past, but also confidence in the future; in the style’s continuing appeal. Contemporary furniture is about now and into the future. Contemporary furniture is well adapted for use in multi-purpose rooms, thanks to its modern form; which creates comfortable, easy to live with furnishings. Transitional furniture can convey simple elegance; it is furniture, which is refined yet still fun. Transitional is a style that can contain highlights of the eclectic and the surprising – colour and detail.

These simple steps can take what may seem like a daunting process and turning it into a pleasant and inspiring one.
